In November1991,a new strain of quails named,VELLUNTHARA QUAILS has been developed by the quailary unit of the Vellunthara Hatcheries,Kollam,Kerala state of South India.Japanese Quails,sporting-pure white feathers with reddish eyes have been successfully developed by the unit through the process of selective breeding.
Dr Sasidharan,a veterinarian in department of Animal Husbantary,kerala Government and who was engaged in research and developement of Japanese Quail breeding in his family owned Vellunthara hatcherieshas successfully developed this lucrative strain.
Vellunthara Hatcheries is propagating quail farming since 1988.This inventitionof pure white feathered quails with red eye is getting popular among people as a" love bird" in households apart from the present purpose to which it is put for meats and eggs. This record is for the first time in the world.
